Publication standards

Introduction

Avisos de Viena  is committed to ensuring ethics in publication and the quality of articles. Conformance to standards of ethical behaviour is therefore expected of all parties involved: Authors, Editors, Reviewers, and the Publisher.

Duties of Editors

Publication Decisions

The Chief Editors are responsible for deciding which of the submitted manuscripts should be published. The Chief Editors may be guided by the policies of the journal's Editorial Board and constrained by legal requirements regarding libel, copyright infringement, and plagiarism. The Chief Editors may confer with other editors or reviewers in making publication decisions.

Fair Review

The Chief Editors ensure that each manuscript received is evaluated on its intellectual content without regard to the author's race, gender, sexual orientation, religious belief, ethnic origin, citizenship, or political philosophy.

Confidentiality

The Chief Editors and editorial staff must not disclose any information about a submitted manuscript to anyone other than the authors, reviewers, potential reviewers, other editorial advisers, and the publisher.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Unpublished materials disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used by editors or the members of the editorial board for their own research purposes without the author's explicit written consent.

Vigilance over Published Record

The Chief Editors should work to safeguard the integrity of the published record by reviewing and assessing reported or suspected misconduct in consultation with the publisher.

Duties of Reviewers

Contribution to Editorial Decisions

Peer review assists the Chief Editors and the Editorial Board in making editorial decisions and, through the editorial communication with the author, may also assist the author in improving the manuscript.

Promptness

Any invited referee who feels unqualified to review the research reported in a manuscript or knows that its timely review will be impossible should immediately notify the Chief Editors so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

Confidentiality

Any manuscripts received for review must be treated as confidential documents. They must not be shown to or discussed with others except if authorized by the Chief Editors.

Standards of Objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively. Personal criticism of the author is unacceptable. Reviewers should express their views clearly with appropriate supporting arguments.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the authors. Any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other published work should be reported to the Chief Editors.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

Privileged information or ideas obtained through peer review must be kept confidential and not used for personal advantage. Reviewers should not consider evaluating manuscripts in which they have conflicts of interest.

Duties of Authors

Reporting Standards

Authors reporting results of original research should present an accurate account of the work performed as well as an objective discussion of its significance. Data should be represented accurately in the manuscript. A paper should contain sufficient detail and references to permit others to replicate the work. Fraudulent or knowingly inaccurate statements constitute unethical behaviour and are unacceptable.

Originality and Plagiarism

Authors should ensure that they have written entirely original works, and if the authors have used the work and/or words of others, that this has been appropriately cited. Plagiarism in all its forms constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Multiple, Redundant, or Concurrent Publication

An author should not in general publish manuscripts describing essentially the same research in more than one journal or primary publication. Parallel submission of the same manuscript to more than one journal constitutes unethical publishing behaviour and is unacceptable.

Acknowledgement of Sources

Proper acknowledgement of the work of others must always be given. Authors should also cite publications that have been influential in determining the nature of the reported work.

Authorship of the Manuscript

Authorship should be limited to those who have made a significant contribution to the conception, design, execution, or interpretation of the reported study. All those who have made significant contributions should be listed as co-authors. Where there are others who have participated in certain substantive aspects of the research project, they should be named in an acknowledgement section. The corresponding author should ensure that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and have agreed to its submission for publication.

Disclosure and Conflicts of Interest

All authors should disclose in their manuscript any financial or other substantive conflict of interest that might be construed to influence the results or their interpretation in the manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed.

Fundamental Errors in Published Works

When an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in his/her own published work, it is the author's obligation to promptly notify the journal's Editor-in-Chief and cooperate with them to either correct the paper in the form of an erratum or to retract the paper. If the Editor-in-Chief learns from a third party that a published work contains a significant error or inaccuracy, it is the author's obligation to promptly correct or retract the paper.

Addressing Research Misconduct

Avisos de Viena is committed to preventing research misconduct and addressing it when it occurs. Research misconduct includes:

  • Fabrication of data or results
  • Falsification or manipulation of research materials, equipment, or processes
  • Plagiarism, including self-plagiarism
  • Inappropriate authorship claims
  • Undisclosed conflicts of interest

In cases of suspected misconduct, the Editors-in-Chief will follow the COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines for investigation and resolution.

Open Access Policy

Avisos de Viena provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. All published articles are made available under a Creative Commons license, and authors retain copyright.

Data Sharing and Reproducibility

Authors are encouraged to share the data and other artefacts supporting the results in the paper by archiving it in an appropriate public repository. Authors should include a data accessibility statement, including a link to the repository they have used so that this statement can be published alongside their paper.

Post-Publication Discussions and Corrections

Avisos de Viena welcomes post-publication discussion on published research. Comments may be posted through the journal's website. When necessary, authors will be invited to respond to comments.

The Editors-in-Chief will consider relevant comments or criticisms of work published in the journal and ensure authors are given the opportunity to respond.

This statement is based on Elsevier recommendations, the COPE Code of Conduct, and international standards for editors and authors.
