Abstract

A central task of public administration is the creation of data stocks - for the fulfilment of its own tasks, but also for use by others. These data stocks serve as a basis for decision-making, planning, documentation, control and evaluation. This is how registers are created: from statistics on causes of death to social security data and the transparency database to Statistik Austria, the largest Austrian "data bunker". As a rule, access to many high-quality data sets is severely restricted or not possible at all. In Austria, things progressed in recent years. This article provides a concise overview of these changes.
