Abstract

This research article explores baptismal records from the parish of Mieza, Spain, spanning the years 1670 to 1850. It delves into patterns of godparent selection, noting a preference for maternal relatives. Additionally, it investigates the practice of conditional baptisms, particularly when doubts arose regarding the validity of emergency baptisms. The study reveals an increase in conditional baptisms in the mid-19th century. Reasons for such baptisms varied, including uncertainty about the proper administration of the sacrament. Through meticulous examination of baptismal entries, the article underscores the rich historical and cultural insights gleaned from parish records. It emphasizes that these records serve as more than mere birth registrations, providing valuable glimpses into the social fabric of rural Spanish communities.
