Why the 'European Association of Chinese Studies' Matters

Abstract

In this celebratory speech, the history of the ‘European Association of Chinese Studies’ is sketched against the background of the developments of world history since 1975, the year the Association was established. It is outlined how these developments have also impacted the nature of Sinology and Chinese Studies, the way these study domains have been organized at European universities, and the way scholars have, throughout these developments organized themselves in academic associations. The speech also outlines how the ‘European Association of Chinese Studies’ has defined and redefined itself in the course of its history.
