Abstract

The study analyses the political changes in the context of changes in the lifeworlds of inhabi- tants of Jundrov/Jundorf, a small suburban community on the outskirts of an industrial city (Brno/Brünn). The change in the social profile in the community affected by industrialisation is also reflected in the changes of the direction of information flows and of public issues. Mutual personal acquaintance of the inhabitants contributed to the specification of conflicts in national and ideological disputes. The system of local authorities based on the harmony of interests of the aristocratic family and the major landowners was gradually eroded under the pressure of secularisation, the rise of socialist movement and the canvassing of progressive intelligentsia related to Brno. The transformation of the suburban community into an urban neighbourhood on both political and lifeworld levels was completed by the wave of radicalisation connected with the end of World War I.
