From Crime Scene Investigation to Pattern Recognition

Abstract

Since the Enlightenment, the crime novel in its various forms has been underpinned by an epistemological model focused on individual cases and the interpretation of details, which Carlo Ginzburg has called the “evidential paradigm”. In the age of Big Data and Pre-Policing this epistemological model has become obsolete and with the narrative paradigm of crime fiction is called into question.

Seit der Aufklärung liegt dem Kriminalroman ein epistemologisches Modell zugrunde, das sich auf Einzelfälle und die Interpretation von Details gründet und das Carlo Ginzburg das „Indizienparadigma“ genannt hat. Im Zeitalter von Big Data und Pre-Policing ist dieses erkenntnistheoretische Modell obsolet geworden und stellt das narrative Paradigma des Kriminalromans in Frage.
