The article explores the religious dynamics in the Basque region, contrasting the ancient pagan worship of Mari, the principal deity, with the later Christianization and veneration of the Virgin Mary. Drawing from legends, place names, and historical accounts, it depicts Mari as a powerful goddess associated with natural phenomena and human settlements. In contrast, the introduction of Christianity was gradual, with pagan traditions persisting well into the medieval period. The linguistic isolation of the Basques further influenced the distinct interpretations of "Mari" and "Maria" in the region. While pagan practices endured, the Catholic influence strengthened during the Counter-Reformation era. The study highlights the complexities of religious syncretism and the gradual transition from pagan to Christian beliefs in the Basque territories.
