Abstract

The article delves into the plight of an abandoned child, Juan, in 19th-century Spain, tracing his journey from infancy to untimely death and reflecting on the harsh realities faced by such "incluseros" or foundlings. Through meticulous historical analysis, it explores societal attitudes towards child abandonment, the challenges of survival in rural foster care, and the pervasive risks of infant mortality. Highlighting the complexities of maternal care, socioeconomic conditions, and cultural norms, the narrative paints a vivid picture of the precarious existence endured by vulnerable children in an era marked by poverty, disease, and social stigma.
