Vol. 17 (2020): Cities – Regions – Hinterlands: Metabolisms, Markets, and Mobilities Revisited
Editor: Martin Knoll
Editorial staff: Reinhard Bodner, Brigitte Semanek and Stephan Stockinger, assisted by Ulrich Schwarz-Gräber
For centuries, cities have maintained close and complex relations with their hinterlands, which were structured by zones of agricultural production, transport corridors, market relations, but also by political dominance or land ownership. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the relationship between city and hinterland was renegotiated under the auspices of fossil-energy-driven, industrialized, and globalized economies and societies. Forms of mobility such as migration and tourism intensified and became complicating factors as well. Based on case studies from Austria, Denmark, and Italy, the 2020 yearbook examines the historically changing relationships between cities and rural areas as well as the production of socio-economic, social-ecological, and cultural regionality.
