Abstract

This article explores the challenges and possibilities of sustaining minoritized languages and translingual practices, especially across generations. It critically examines how monolingual norms in educational institutions perpetuate postcolonial language ideologies. These norms not only marginalize multilingualism in migration societies but also negatively affect the well-being of multilingual individuals – especially across generations. The article explores how intergenerational language maintenance can be supported under difficult social conditions (such as experiences of linguicism), and how translingual practices can function as equally valid ways of expressing oneself. Drawing on critical perspectives, the article questions the ongoing impact of colonial thought patterns in the context of migration and migration languages. It aims to develop strategies for the fair recognition of minoritized languages and translingual practices, as well as for a linguicism-critical and sustainable pedagogy and didactics of language maintenance.
