For a couple of years now, the educational discourse has been calling for and promoting increased parental participation in their childrenʼs education. However, little attention is paid to the perspective and life situation of the parents themselves and the various discriminatory realities that parents are confronted with. This applies in particular to parents and families who do not conform to the societal norms of the nuclear family. This article focuses on parents in the context of forced migration and raises the hypothesis that those parents should be seen in a dual role as carers and learners which is not recognised in educational institutions. Against the background of societal relations characterised by linguicism and racism, the article asks about the meaning of this dual role for parents. How do they position themselves in relation to different expectations and how do they shift or change societal role norms?
