Abstract

The article analyzes the importance of style-formation processes in youth cultures. Starting from an analysis of social structures on the basis of a sociology of culture important readings of the debate on youth (sub)cultures within the social sciences are being reconstructed. In reference to British youth-research centered around the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) the article then traces the complex interrelations between the development of styles and youth culture. The author concludes that multifarious cultural processes of change in style - within the context of shiftings of cultural power - indicate that we should no longer speak of youth (sub)cultures, but rather of youth cultures, and better drop the emphatic ,sub’.
