Abstract

Video games are trending towards historical authenticity. However, as the evolution of the Civilization series shows, this trend comes up against the limits of game mechanics, which themselves demand a certain logic that cannot be overcome without changing the core of gaming experience. Games may face a choice between individualized and historically correct gaming experiences at the cost of strategical depth and replayability. “Civ” is a prime example of this delicate balancing, as in its long run of instalments, it has adapted to changing visions of historical authenticity while trying to stay true to its core gameplay mechanics. Unsurprisingly, the gaming community is divided on whether this balance has been achieved. In my article I argue that the game tried to achieve authenticity by making its governing principles more abstract and flexible. At the same time, seemingly increased possibilities of choice for the player actually take away some strategic depth.
