Abstract

The general critique of the androcentric structure of social science research leaves the question of the specific conditions of production and reproduction of androcentrism within the disciplines unanswered. Androcentrism within geography can be traced back to the conditions under which geography became an academic discipline in the 19th century. The historical proximity of geographic research to life-world experience and common sense theories over-emphasized the particular subject positions of those who were establishing geography: white middle-class men. Therefore the gender bias (together with class and ethnic biases) influenced the geographic 'world-view' more directly than might be the case in the other social sciences.
