Abstract

This paper outlines the development and implementation of the Shared RDM Services & Infrastructure project, a key initiative aimed at establishing a coordinated and sustainable national landscape for research data management (RDM) in Austria. Building on the foundations of the FAIR Data Austria initiative, the project focuses on translating FAIR principles into institutional practice by developing scalable, cross-institutional operating models. The project evaluates, integrates, and deploys a portfolio of essential research data management software solutions, including the data analytics platform CyVerse Austria, the machine-actionable data management plan (maDMP) tool DAMAP, the electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) eLabFTW, and the repository systems DBRepo, InvenioRDM, and PHAIDRA, thereby supporting FAIR-compliant data practices across diverse research disciplines. In parallel, it strengthens national research data management capacity through shared competences by providing training resources, establishing networking platforms such as the National RDM Exchange, and analysing the evolving professional landscape of Data Stewardship. The results indicate that the project acts as a catalyst for institutional transformation, fostering a cultural shift toward Open Science, supporting Austria’s integration into the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), and laying the foundation for AI-ready data and trustworthy AI-driven research.
