Aufwachsen mit Medien in einer prä-digitalen Zeit

This article presents partial results of a study that examines the media socialisation of adults with low levels of education who were already young adults when privately used digital media first emerged. The theoretical basis is formed by the mediatisation approach, praxeological media socialisation research and Bourdieu's theory of social space. On the one hand, the article highlights the importance of socio-economic and socio-emotional factors in childhood and adolescence for a person's entire life. The media habitus of parents thus has a considerable influence on the media socialisation of young people. For example, the media habits of parents are adopted into everyday life in adulthood. In addition, gender-specific differences in media behaviour become apparent from adolescence onwards. Audiovisual media and popular content dominate media use. On the other hand, the article deals with the target group's perception of media change. Practicality in everyday life is the predominant motivating factor for the private use of digital media. Overwhelm, social pressure and a great need for security are negative phenomena associated with media change.
