Abstract

A responsible and secure use of data is essential in a digitally networked world. Accordingly, data literacy has developed as a concept and framework of competencies, but the set of competencies is ambiguous. Digital data are highly dynamic and they are always context-sensitive and embedded in algorithmic processes and technological systems. At the same time, this means that they are not limited to individual contexts, but can generate new insights when dealing with the data. Accordingly, a connection between data literacy and coding literacy can be derived. The paper highlights different approaches to data literacy, focusing on key skills such as critical thinking and creativity to justify this connection. Three approaches are discussed on how creativity can be developed via data literacy.
