Abstract

The Haus der Geschichte Österreich (hdgö) has been practicing digital curating since its opening, with combining material and virtual exhibition spaces. The hdgö has developed digital tools such as an encyclopaedia, interactive maps or diagrams that provide orientation, but the core are virtual exhibition activities "Growing Web Exhibitions", designed by visitors. The text presents experiences with so-called user-generated content (UGC) and argues that in this way historical narratives can be broken up, museums can be productively irritated and thus a democratization process of the institution could be set in motion.
