Abstract

The discussion about art and AI raises key questions about authorship, creativity and the value of art. Generative AI systems such as Midjourney and ChatGPT enable rapid media production, but increasingly decouple this from the physical creative process. While some speak of democratisation, others fear the extinction of creative professions and the dominance of capitalist efficiency.

The Western separation of body and mind is critically examined, while concepts such as Japanese shokunin - the unity of hand and mind through decades of practice - serve as an alternative perspective. In the face of AI, art could create new forms of expression by focussing on what machines cannot achieve: intuitive, immediate and physical-emotional communication. This could lead to open, constructive discourse and show how art and technology can coexist.
