Abstract

Three-armed robots conduct orchestras, algorithms control the distribution of information tailored to specific needs and increasingly autonomous automation processes are irreversibly transforming the realities of human life: Artificial intelligence (AI) is not only a dominant factor in the headlines, it has also inscribed itself into the most diverse sub-areas of global and planetary systems with astonishing speed.
In a society in which digitality has become the central moment of self-constitution and self-description, it is essential that technology is also scrutinised in terms of its social, educational and democratic impact. In view of the negotiations surrounding Industry 4.0 - e.g. comprehensive digitalisation - and Industry 5.0 - e.g. cooperation between man(s) and machine(s) - it is particularly important from the perspective of media education not only to analyse current developments constructively and critically, but also to actively contribute from the perspective of their interests and, above all, not to ignore the deep historical dimension of the latest trends.
