In her deliberately personal review essay, the renowned medievalist and researcher Christa A. Tuczay analyses a monograph on the romantic image of the Middle Ages in German studies. In her reading of the volume, she takes equal account of the historical developments and didactic concepts of German philology associated with it, while at the same time describing critical aspects in great detail. Tuczay aims at differentiation and contextualization when discussing German texts of the Middle Ages, therefore argues against an application of post-colonial concepts to German medieval literature or the ideologization of literature and literary studies.
