(Un)Sichtbarkeit von Frauen in Lehr- und Einführungswerken der Ur- und Frühgeschichtlichen Archäologie

Abstract

In the introductory phase of their studies, students and thus future archaeologists are offered role models. At the same time, existing ideas and preconceptions about the history and development of archaeology as a science are partly consolidated and partly corrected at the beginning of the study. Introductory literature and textbooks play a decisive role in this. But is gender addressed in the presentation of the history of the discipline? How are women working in archaeology portrayed? Do they appear at all? For this article, we analyze German-language publications that have been written as introductions to prehistoric and early historical archaeology since the 1950s and can therefore (also) be regarded as textbooks. We examine how the history of the discipline is presented and which figures from the history of the discipline are shown and discussed. We limit the scope to literature from the Federal Republic of Germany, mainly for lack of space.
