Abstract

The paper reconstructs a debate that took place before the millennial turn about the effects of cyberspace for the Oedipus complex. In the context of media education, the discussion whether digital media suspend or realize entry to the symbolic order, or whether they assume an ambivalent role, was taken up particularly with regard to the educational significance of computer games. Today, against the backdrop of a lifeworld massively permeated by digital technologies and gamification, the question concerning the relation of digital media and symbolic order needs to be posed in a different manner.
