Abstract

An examination of the phenomenon of automata, robots and, most recently, cyborgs in art, literature and theatre. The focus lies upon E. T. A. Hofmann's horror tale "Der Sandmann", in which the student Nathanael falls in love with the automata "Olimpia". The fairy tale forms the starting point for the artistic engagement of the theatre maker Bernd Liepold-Mosser and his production "Sandmann" at the Wiener Theater in Gumpendorferstraße. The text examines the question of whether our complex thinking can coincide with digital artificial intelligence.
