With accurate language and an eye for detail the four crime novellas by the now almost forgotten Viennese author Auguste Groner (1850-1929) take modern readers back to the city of Vienna at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. In the fast paced time of the so-called ‚Ringstraßenzeit‘, the protagonists – often outcasts or outsiders – find themselves in the midst of social abysses, dealing with questions of guilt, responsibility and justice. Whilst meticulously writing about extraordinary crimes the author also paints the picture of a time that is long gone, but whose problems have not lost their relevance to this day.
