Abstract

This paper draws on Frank Herbert’s novel Dune in its aim to show to what extent science fiction can confront us with questions in the field of tension between human-technology-environment beyond unquestioned techno-optimism or -pessimism and thereby serve as a space for reflection, especially for ethical questions. The contribution first examines and contrasts central questions and ideas of the two utopias of critical posthumanism and transhumanism. Afterwards it is explored to what extent (media) pedagogy might be linked to the demands articulated by critical posthumanism. Subsequently, it is shown with some examples how Frank Herbert's novel Dune addresses and illustrates central ideas and questions of critical posthumanism and thereby directs a pressing appeal to us.
