Das Ende der Erziehung?
Was die alte Welt von Australiens Medienverboten lernen kann

Like many other countries, German-speaking countries are currently discussing a ban on mobile phones in schools, a ban on social media for children, or an age limit for teenagers. While Austria is introducing a nationwide ban on mobile phones in the first eight school years from 2025, Switzerland is primarily implementing more restrictive regulations at cantonal level, supported by broad social approval. As in Germany, discussions about stricter regulations and technical age verification on social media are ongoing in both countries. These discussions reflect the increasing uncertainty surrounding the use of digital media in childhood and adolescence, as well as the question of whether regulations should replace educational debate.
Looking at Australia, one of the first countries in the world to introduce far-reaching bans on mobile phones and social media, can help us to critically assess these developments in German-speaking countries. This is precisely the aim of this article.
