Joann Sfar’s autobiographical comics, like his fictional stories, are a fascinating mixture of the real, the dreamed, the possible and the impossible. While his book Die Synagoge focuses on his father, Der Götzendiener revolves around his mother, who died young, and her defining place in the picturesque universe of the French illustrator and storyteller.
